CEA releases member voting recommendations for Election 2016

The CEA is encouraging high voter turnout among its membership to ensure educator voice is heard loud and clear in Election 2016. For months, bi-partisan teams of CEA members interviewed candidates for public office and reviewed state and local ballot initiatives to give the membership an informed opinion on how educator votes can make a positive difference for their profession and for their students in federal, state and local elections.

“Our members are keenly aware of the powerful influence elected officials have in education policy and practice, and the profound impact ballot measures can have on public schools, especially those aiming to increase local school funding while our state continues to run an education funding deficit,” said CEA President Kerrie Dallman.

CEA is supporting Amendment 70, raising the minimum wage to $12 by 2020. “Poverty is one of the greatest barriers to student achievement,” Dallman noted. “Raising the minimum wage will help thousands of students and their families who live in poverty get a real shot at improving their lives.”

CEA is opposing Amendment 71, the “Raise the Bar” initiative. “While we share the concern that our state’s constitution is too easy to change, Amendment 71 simply goes too far and would result in only wealthy, special interests being able to access the initiative process,” Dallman explained. “For too many years, TABOR and its interactions with other constitutional provisions have taken a serious toll on Colorado’s public schools. Addressing these issues is a top priority for CEA, and Amendment 71 would make it nearly impossible to restore fiscal common sense in our constitution.”

Dallman strongly encourages all CEA members review the following recommendations formed by their colleagues and “exercise their right to vote in this critical election as together we build the quality public school system all students deserve.”
