State’s new governor supports full-day kindergarten for all, competitive teacher pay
DENVER – The Colorado Education Association congratulates Jared Polis, our recommended candidate for governor, on his election win tonight. CEA backed Polis for his history of strong support for public education investment for students and collective bargaining rights for workers.
Polis’ service in Colorado and the U.S. Congress as a public education champion shows he is ready to collaborate with educators and advocate for key school improvements, including better pay for teachers and school staff, protection of PERA’s defined benefit for retirees, and equity in learning opportunities for all Colorado kids.
“Colorado’s inequitable school funding has created haves and have-nots among our children and nowhere is that more apparent than access to early childhood education. We are excited to work with Jared Polis on his commitment to make universal full-day kindergarten and preschool a reality,” said high school counselor and CEA President Amie Baca-Oehlert.
As the leading voice of educators in Colorado, CEA will share its legislative priorities with our new governor and legislature and work collectively to address weak school investment that is $2,800 less than the national average for each student. TABOR revenue restrictions must be lifted that prevents Colorado from making critical investments in our kids and their future.
“Everyone is going to have to come together for all kids in the upcoming legislative session to pass student-centered, educator-led policies. We look forward to working with Governor-elect Polis and the legislature to take meaningful steps to address the teacher shortage, specifically by designing an accountability system that makes sense,” Baca-Oehlert added.
