Reading & Literacy Initiatives in NCLBNCLB increases funding for two literacy initiatives: Reading First and Early Reading First. Both aim to have all children reading at proficiency level by the end of grade 3. Both are voluntary programs to help districts and states use scientifically-based research to improve reading instruction for young children.
Reading FirstThis program replaces the Reading Excellence Act. It is intended to help districts identify and adopt scientifically-based reading programs and ensure all classroom teachers in grades K-3 can identify children who are at risk of reading failure so they can provide effective, early instruction. Funds are dedicated to help districts implement teacher professional development and valid, reliable screening, diagnosis, and classroom-based assessments.
Early Reading FirstThis program is designed to promote reading readiness in preschool-age children before they get to kindergarten. Information about Early Reading First, including the grant program and eligible districts, can be found on the U.S. Department of Education's web site. |
