Voucher and Private School Tax Credit Bills

The House Finance Committee killed HB 1081 by Rep. Kevin Lundberg (Berthoud) on January 31, 2008. The bill would have created three property tax credits for private and religious school tuition.

On February 20, the Senate Education Committee killed SB 142 sponsored by Sen. Nancy Spence (Centennial), a former Cherry Creek School Board member and long time voucher proponent. The bill would have created vouchers for special education students. Sen. Spence sponsored the 2003 voucher law that the State Supreme Court struck down because it violated the constitutional guarantee of local school control. SB 142 died on a party line vote.

CEA opposed both bills.
