DUES-TAB No Cost Life Insurance

Belonging to our Association comes with a lot of benefits – including an automatic life and accidental death insurance policy called DUES-TAB at no cost beyond your dues.

Active Members (teachers, higher education faculty, and educational support professionals - delete personnel) and Reserve Members are covered by DUES-TAB. The coverage includes:

  • a $1,000 term life insurance benefit;
  • a $5,000 accidental death and dismemberment insurance benefit;
  • a special $50,000 benefit for covered accidents that occur while on the job or serving as an Association leader;
  • and up to $150,000 of life insurance for unlawful homicide while on the job.

    Your benefit for the life insurance portion of DUES-TAB depends on your number of continuous years of NEA membership. Simply, it's an amount equivalent to your NEA dues paid since membership year 1981-82 when DUES-TAB was begun. Your life insurance benefit increases every year by the same amount as that year's NEA dues up to a maximum of $1,000 as long as you remain a continuous member of our Association.

    We ask each member to register a beneficiary for DUES-TAB. There are two easy ways to find out if you have done this or to change your beneficiary:

    1. Call NEA Member Benefits toll-free at 800-637-4636. Give your name and Social Security number. The Member Benefits staff person will look you up. If you're certified, there's nothing more to do to make DUES-TAB an active benefit for you. If you're not, NEA Member Benefits staff will send you the DUES-TAB Beneficiary Certification form.

    2. Or you can check online and complete a beneficiary form there.

    Your DUES-TAB coverage is automatic when you join our Association, but you must register your beneficiary.

    If you plan to go on leave from your job, you must convert your membership to Reserve status in order to keep your DUES-TAB coverage. If you drop your membership or let it lapse, your DUES-TAB coverage is lost and, when you resume membership, you start all over with the term life insurance benefit. We can provide information about Reserve Membership.
